Overview

Jade is a 3D engine originally developed by Ubisoft Montpellier in conjunction with their then upcoming game, Beyond Good & Evil.1) Following Beyond Good & Evil's release it was subsequently used by the studio for the Peter Jackson King Kong tie-in game and Rayman Raving Rabbids.

The engine supports a wide range of platforms, such as Microsoft Windows, Microsoft Xbox, Microsoft Xbox 360, Nintendo GameCube, Nintendo Wii, Sony PlayStation 2 and more.

The majority of the original core engine is written in C with some components such as the editor shell, which utilizes MFC, written in C++. Other studios such as Ubisoft Montreal, which developed their own fork of the engine, appear to have elected to migrate the engine to C++.

On the 24th of December 2022, a version of the Jade engine from the development of Rayman Raving Rabbids was leaked to the public2) allowing the community to view a development version of both the game and engine for the first time.

Jade was succeeded by the LyN engine.

Distributions

The original distribution that leaked can be found here. It includes a copy of the source code for Jade, data for an early version of Rayman Raving Rabbids, and binaries for both the editor and runtime shells.

Since the original leak a number of fan-made patches have been released which you can apply on top of the original leak to provide a more stable experience.

Droolie's patch

Droolie's patch aims to resolve issues with the scripts, worlds, input, and stability. It's very likely the most extensive patch out there right now, allowing users to play around within a larger portion of the leak which wasn't previously easily accessible.

The latest release can be found here.

Jaded patch

This patch is developed by hogsy and focused towards resolving issues with the OpenGL renderer (such as textures appearing white for some GPUs), better controller support including support for a wider range of controllers generally, improvements to performance, an FPS cap, removing some obsolete functionality, modernising the editor and a number of stability improvements.

The latest release of the patch can be downloaded here.

:!: Keep in mind that Jaded is currently optimised for Droolie's patched BF. :!:
